AVAILABLE DAYS/HOURS
Service hours are scheduled with your placement teacher, typically for a continuous block of instructional time between 8am and 3pm, depending on the school's schedule.

DUTIES
Help struggling 1st-8th grade students succeed and assist teachers in meeting the needs of all learners through our Your Experience Counts program. This program trains and matches volunteers with teachers in low-income area (Title I) schools in one of our partner districts: Mesa Public Schools, Balsz, Osborn, and Washington Elementary School District.

You will:
1. Build a supportive, working relationship with a 1st-8th grade classroom teacher.
2. Cultivate rapport with students and interact with them in a professional and culturally sensitive manner.
3. Learn and implement effective strategies for helping students succeed in core academic curriculum.
4. Communicate regularly with the classroom teacher and the Y.E.C. program manager, problem-solving and collaborating as needed.
5. Attend at least 1 of the Y.E.C. program's monthly meetings to learn best practices and to collaborate with other volunteers.

Elementary & middle school students, ages 6-14 years old, attending local Title I (high need) schools

COMMUNITY NEED
Your Experience Counts volunteers help local schools address two immediate needs: One, providing support to teachers who are often hard-pressed to meet the needs of all students in their classrooms, and two, offering more personal interaction and academic assistance to students, particularly those with achievement gaps.

COMMUNITY IMPACT
Students who work closely with Y.E.C. volunteers display significant improvements in motivation and measurable growth in academic achievement. Teachers report feeling more supported as practitioners and notice a positive impact on the classroom learning environment.

Requirement Details1. Have a heart for children and be able to support them with consistency and empathy.
2. Bring a willingness to learn and implement new strategies and educational best practices.
3. Conduct oneself professionally and with a sensitivity to the full work loads that teachers carry.
4. Be a good listener and a clear communicator.

BACKGROUND CLEARANCE DETAILS (if any)

1. After the phone interview, we will invite you to complete your Sterling Volunteers background check from your home computer.
2. Sterling Volunteers background check cost is covered by donation, and only takes 1 week to process.
3. Dysart & Washington districts will schedule you to roll fingerprints after you have started your internship under our provisional background check.  All other districts accept our background check for full placement.

TRAINING REQUIRED DETAILS(if any)

Fall interns participate in a 4 hour, interactive training. More details will be emailed after the application and phone interview have been completed. Training topics include:
