    UNLV Engelstad Scholar Service Hours

Today, I made a powerpoint presentation about mindfulness and shared it with Mary from Griffith Elementary School. The mindfulness activities that I shared today were texture walks, heartbeat exercise, breathing boards, mindfulness scavenger hunt, and mindful vs. unmindful. I am always happy to make these powerpoints, as I know how crucial these activities can be to the populations that we serve.

On this day, I created a powerpoint about respect and shared it with Mary. I talked about the different types of respect, and gave examples on how students can show respect to themselves, their peers, their teachers and grown ups, their environment, and property. I also included some reflection questions so that students can recall their own instances of showing respect. This was fun for me to do, and it helped me to learn that it is important for children to learn about respect so that they can grow up to be respectful adults.

On this day, I did the same thing as the day before when I visited the Senior Center to help with an event for J.T. McWilliams Elementary School. I was responsible for passing out drawstring backpacks filled with information, collecting paperwork that described the services used by each family, and sending boxes of food with each family. I helped with setting up, and I also helped with cleaning up. It was great to get to meet some students and their families face to face. It was also exciting to see how thrilled the students were to see their site coordinator in person!

On this day, I met Irazu, who does a lot of the "behind the scenes" work for Communities in Schools. We met at the CIS warehouse downtown, and together, we conducted inventory of some donations received by CIS. I used a notebook and wrote tally marks for every item donated. Irazu explained to me the importance of this inventory, and how it encourages other businesses in the community to make donations. I learned about a little more of what Communities in Schools does, as well as learned about what will be going on at some future volunteering opportunities that have been made available to me.

On this day, I compiled a powerpoint presentation about mindfulness, and I shared it with Mary. I did some thorough research about the benefits of mindfulness, and then I found some exercises that would promote mindfulness among students. I added a quote about mindfulness as well. Overall, I think that this was very beneficial to my own understanding of elementary school students. I learned that mindfulness can decrease feelings of anxiety, and increase emotional intelligence in younger children. I am hopeful that these exercises will be beneficial to the students of Griffith Elementary School.

On this day, I went to the Howard Lieburn Senior Center. First, I met a girl named Alyssa, and we handed out food bags to the families that came in. After a little while, I moved to a different station, and helped students pick out backpacks. As they did this, I spoke with their parents about the Communities in Schools program, and collected from them signed papers that gave CIS permission to work with their children. I enjoyed seeing the children and speaking with their parents. I was glad to be doing my hours in person!

Today I got on the phone with Mary and we reconnected. We talked about what Griffith ES is doing in response to the Coronavirus situation, and talked about some things that we might be able to work out as far as service hours go. We discussed the best ways to communicate with one another, and Mary asked that I put together some exercises that students could do to become more mindful.
